Cut Your Cable Bill With Mohu

A review on the Mohu Sky 60 TV Antenna

Eight years ago, we moved to the country. When doing so, we knew we would need to make a shift in our budget. A larger mortgage payment due to owning more land meant a smaller budget for other things. One of the things we chose to cut back on was to cut our cable bill. (There really isn’t anything great on TV nowadays anyway.)

The weekend we moved in, I ran over to Radio Shack and bought a cheap $20 indoor set of “rabbit ears” antenna. It worked fairly well and we were pleasantly set up with FREE HDTV pretty quickly. We live about 40 miles from Peoria, about 60 miles from Champaign and about 75 miles from Springfield. This is where most of the “local” network TV channels would be aired from for us to watch.

Old style "rabbit ear" antenna

Everything has it’s time…

After first purchasing the antenna, when the weather was bad or cloudy, the signal was only diminished slightly. As the years went by though, the signal seemed to dwindle more and more. By the time we needed an upgrade, I was heavily tempted to use 4-letter words while trying to watch TV. The signal was so weak, even when it was good weather, every time we sat down to watch TV we had to get back up and reposition the antennas in multiple configurations. It was like performing Cirque Du Soleil on top of the TV before we could attain even a somewhat viewable picture. Up, down, up, down, left, right, left (haha!)…. it was infuriating! By the time we finally had some resolution, the evening weather report was over and we had missed the whole thing!

I was completely fed up! Enter the internet. I do love the internet to do most of my research for me! I’m sure I’ve saved 100’s of hours comparing items by finding sites with viable reviews. In my quick, semi-extensive research, it seemed like there was one company heading the ranks in reviews: Mohu.

Mo who?

Who? No, Mohu… this company offers a range of indoor and outdoor antennas for various signal ranges, depending on how far away you live from the broadcasting stations. You can check out their Mohu Station Finder to see what channels are available in your area and which antenna would work best for your needs.

Indoor

Initially, I was really hooked on the Mohu Leaf 30 TV Antenna. It’s an indoor model they offer that’s paper thin, kind of like a vinyl cling. It’s so low profile it can fit behind a picture hanging on the wall, you can mount it to the back of your TV or it can even be hung in plain sight and painted to match the wall. This seemed a lot less obtrusive than the prominent “rabbit ears” that sat near my TV all the time. This antenna supports both UHF and VHF, but this model’s range was only about 40 miles and not strong enough to reach some of the channels we wanted.

This is a great option for people who live in town and are closer to the signal being broadcast. And it has a price point of only $29.99 on Amazon!

Outdoor

I was beginning to think we needed to upgrade to an outdoor antenna. Since we live a little further away from the larger cities where the signals were broadcast, we needed a little more range power. All I could picture were the massive grey metal antennas that look like the head of a creature from a sci-fi movie! If you really want one, they still sell these bad boys on Amazon too. This one happens to have about a 100 mile range.

Instead of that monstrosity, I was hoping the Mohu Sky 60 TV Antenna would fit the bill. This antenna has a range of about 70 miles, which would catch most of the channels we were hoping for. It has a pretty low profile and living in Illinois, with gale force winds from time to time, I was hoping it wouldn’t get ripped off the roof.

This antenna is multi-directional, amplified HDTV, supports both UHF and VHF channels, has filtering technology for a crystal clear picture, comes with 30 feet of coaxial cable and only weighs about 3 pounds! It comes with the mounting bracket and everything you need to mount it in your attic, on your roof or pretty much anywhere you like. Once the hubby had it mounted on the roof, we drilled a couple holes, snaked the cable and voila! HDTV for FREE!!!

Instant gratification

Set up was quick and easy. All you need to do is scan for available channels through your TV settings and sit back and enjoy! We get about 20 channels including NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX, Grit, Laff and several more. It’s all we really need. We don’t watch a lot of “live” TV anyway. We like to catch the local weather and news, but for entertainment we typically watch Netflix. I realize Netflix is an extra monthly charge, but it’s not anything like a cable bill!

We have been using this antenna for about 3 years now and have had no problems with it at all. Even in inclement weather, we still get a crystal clear picture. We really couldn’t be happier with this purchase, it was totally worth the investment! For about 3-4 months of “basic” cable cost (depending on the package), we have an antenna that will last for years!
